Historic
DOWNTOWN BRIDGEPORT!
![]()
As the commercial center of the largest city in Connecticut, downtown Bridgeport has seen its share of history, from a campaign speech in front of the brand-new city hall (now McLevy Hall) by a lanky midwestern presidential candidate named Abraham Lincoln to the circus of P.T. Barnum and beyond.
National Register Historic Districts
Although it is geographically compact, downtown Bridgeport contains not one,
but two National Register Historic Districts. The Downtown North Historic District,
currently experiencing renovation and revitalization, is roughly bounded by
Congress, Water, Fairfield Ave., Elm, Golden Hill & Chapel
Sreets. The Downtown South Historic District is roughly bounded by Elm, Cannon,
Main, Gilbert, and Broad Streets. Each district is served by a volunteer commission
that seeks to preserve the historic character of these unique neighborhoods,
home to such architectural treasures as the Barnum Museum, the former Fairfield
County Courthouse and the Palace and Majestic Theaters, to name only
a few.
