The Barnum Museum
One of the most recognizable symbols of Bridgeport, the Barnum Museum (originally known as the Barnum Institute of Science and History) houses a treasure-trove of artifacts and information relating to its founder, the inimitable P.T. Barnum, his businesses, including the “greatest show on earth,” and the history of Bridgeport, which he served as Mayor.
The museum’s distinctive blend of Romanesque and Moorish elements is a reflection of Barnum’s passion for the exotic and the Oriental—an interest shared by many of his contemporaries.
Inside, there is much to engage and delight young and old alike—from a complete, detailed miniature of a three ring circus to a replica of the famous “humbug” the Feejee Mermaid, clothing and a carriage that belonged to General Tom Thumb (who was in real life Bridgeport resident Charles Stratton), a perfectly restored room from the opulent Victorian style Wheeler Mansion, and even a 2,500 year old mummy of an Egyptian priest.
The Barnum Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:30pm and on Sundays from 12:00 noon to 4:30pm. The museum is closed Mondays and holidays.
