Playhouse on the Green

This small, jewel box theater is alive with exciting entertainment throughout the year. Music, comedy, staged readings, lectures and more—all offered at affordable ticket prices—attract a diverse and growing audience to downtown Bridgeport.

Recognized for its brightly lit marquee and celebrated for its beauty, the Playhouse is an award-winning example of the adaptive re-use of historic buildings. The renovation and conversion of the circa 1915 People’s Bank building and several adjacent structures received an award from the Connecticut chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The majestic former bank building has been converted into an intimate yet elegant proscenium theatre with magnificent details including marble walls, Corinthian pilasters, and a coffered ceiling highlighted with gilded florets. The small 228-seat auditorium is very comfortable, with excellent acoustics and superb sightlines. There isn’t a bad seat in the house!

In addition to its mainstage entertainment, the Playhouse on the Green also offers Polka Dot Kids, a wonderful series of family oriented performances, an annual summer theater camp and educational programs including acting, playwriting and more for young and old alike.

The Playhouse on the Green is also available for rental for private parties, performances and events.
