City of Bridgeport to Kick Off 2nd Annual ‘Healthy Walk ‘n Talk’
May 6, 2017 @ 9:00 am - June 10, 2017 @ 10:30 am
The City of Bridgeport Department of Health and Social Services will kick off the 2nd Annual ‘Healthy Walk ‘n Talk’ on May 6, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. ‘Healthy Walk ‘n Talk’ is a 6-week community walking series at Seaside Park in Bridgeport. Each Saturday morning, May 6 through June 10, 2017, the group will meet at Seaside Park near the horse stables and walk from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. This is a free initiative for the public, no registration necessary, all are invited to join the walk. Director of Health and Social Services Maritza Bond said “the Get Healthy Walk ‘n Talk is a fun way to increase physical activity, while building social support and engaging in health discussions.” The Get Healthy Walk ‘n Talk is a group walk created to encourage community members to get physical exercise while talking to community healthcare providers. The first Get Healthy Walk ‘n Talk began in Bridgeport in the spring of 2016 at Seaside Park, and the movement has since spread to several cities in Connecticut. Walking reduces risk factors for heart disease, such as cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity, and reduces the effects of stress. Walking in a group provides social support, which is said to increase the time spent in physical activity, improves fitness levels, and improves confidence in the ability to exercise.]]>
