Faces in My Fist

“Faces in My Fist” is a historical piece I wrote based on the 1920s boxer Harry “Black Panther” Wills. Wills held the “Colored World Heavyweight Championship” three times. Sadly, Wills would never get the shot to become “World Heavyweight Champion” by defeating Jack Dempsey. This play not only explores the “color line” of the early 20th century, but it also gives the audience a realistic look at the damage we do to ourselves when we hold on to hate, victimization, and anger. It takes a young boy from Mississippi with dreams of becoming a boxer, to show an “old” man set in his ways, the truth about life, and how perspective can change our hearts, and release us from holding onto the past.
