Greater Bridgeport Symphony presents Stars & Stripes
April 28, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
STARS AND STRIPES What is the music of the American Revolution — since symphonic music didn’t take root in America until almost the 20th century? American music was song, and so GBS is commissioning (with the Orlando Symphony) a new composition: the songs of the American Revolution and Civil War by Jeremy Kittel, who will also solo on violin. The Northeast premiere of an American anthem! Then we move into Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland, and celebrate two composers who could have only sprung to life in America: George Gershwin — a son of immigrants — with his huge, powerful, rhythmic Cuban Overture (never played by GBS in 72 years!) and Scott Joplin — a son of slaves — with a new arrangement from his opera Treemonisha, a true American masterpiece. Don’t miss this stunning conclusion to an amazing season!]]>
